Jupiter, FL - Jimmy Bosco launched his first home run of the season, but not much else went right for the Palm Beach Cardinals in a 9-1 loss to the Daytona Cubs on Sunday evening at Roger Dean Stadium.

Trailing 3-0 going into the third inning, Bosco pulled a Felix Pena fastball over the right field wall and off the flagpole to cut the deficit to 3-1. The solo blast was his first in a Palm Beach uniform.

The Cardinals (21-8, 57-41) wouldn't come any closer the rest of the night.

Pena was dialed in from the start for the Cubs (17-11, 43-53). The right-hander scattered four hits over seven innings, walked one and struck out seven. Bosco's homer was the only run Pena allowed in the contest as he improved his record to 3-6 in the winning effort.

Pena left the game with a 5-1 advantage and Zack Godley and Austin Kirk made sure the Cardinals didn't make a dent in that lead. The two Daytona relievers pitched two perfect innings to end the game.

Palm Beach starter Nick Petree (5-3) was charged with three runs in the first inning but settled in on the mound after that. The right-hander allowed seven hits in six innings, walked two and struck out five. He didn't allow another Cub to cross home after the first inning, but took the loss for the Cards.

Billy McKinney hit a three-run double for Daytona in the first inning to get the Cubs started on the right foot. Daytona padded their lead with two runs in the seventh off Iden Nazario and four more in the eighth off Logan Billbrough to go up 9-1.

Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run single in the seventh, while Marco Hernandez and Willson Contreras each recorded two-run doubles in the eighth for Daytona.

Cubs center fielder Albert Almora chipped in a 4-for-5 effort at the plate with four singles and two runs in the huge offensive night for the visiting team.

Palm Beach will look to rebound against Daytona on Monday night in game two of the four-game series. RH Silfredo Garcia (6-1, 2.60) will start for the Cardinals against RH Jose Rosario (4-6, 5.24) for the Cubs. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
