Lehr Shines in Bruins Win

In an early season North American Hockey League game featuring two teams at opposite ends of the Central Division standings, the Austin Bruins (6-1-0) took care of business 4-1 against the Brookings Blizzard (0-6-1) Friday night at the Larson Ice Center in Brookings.

It was the Brennan Sanford show in the first period, as the Holt, Michigan native put away two rebounds for goals to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead after one period. Brookings starting goaltender Drew Weigman (Arnold, MD) was pulled after the second goal at 9:46 of the frame for backup Austin Priebe (Wausau, WI). Priebe finished the game in net for the Blizzard.

Brookings came out firing in the second period was turned away time and time again by Bruins goaltender Nick Lehr (Roseville, MN), who made 15 saves in the period, including two on Blizzard breakaways. Austin rookie Brian Bachnak (Brownstown, MI) picked up a loose puck late in the period in front of Priebe and found the net for his first career goal, giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead after two periods.

Lehr was superb all game long, and especially in the third when he had to be, as he made 40 saves in his fifth win of the season. Brookings spoiled the shutout with a power -play goal by Nick DeCenzo (Hibbing, MN) in the third, but couldn t close the gap. Bachnak notched his second goal of the game with an empty-netter in the final minute.

The two teams will wrap up the home-and-home weekend series tomorrow night, when the Bruins host the Blizzard in Austin s home opener at Riverside Arena at 7:05pm.
