Legends Comeback Bid Comes Up Short, 5-3

APPLEBEE'S PARK (Lexington, KY) - With a late-game surge that had most thinking rally, the Legends were left to wonder "What if?" after their shortened contest ended in a seven-inning 5-3 loss.
The Legends had rocky start with Jeff Icenogle (0-1) giving up two runs (one earned) in the first as he started on his way back from an injury this year. Icenogle's five strikeouts in the first three frames, however, did keep Lexington within striking distance in the early going. He was replaced by usual starter Carlos Ladeuth in the fourth, who strung up Delmarva two strikeouts to retire the side.
A Tyler Henson two-run homer with no outs furthered Shorebird cause in the fifth. Henson would prove to be a problem for the Legends, finishing 1-2 with a home run, two runs, two RBI and walk in three plate appearances.
Ladeuth rode his strong curveball through his four innings, giving up a combined three runs in the fifth and sixth. Despite giving up a run in the top half, the Legends would surge in the home side of the sixth. One of Lexington's recent signings came up big in the sixth. New catcher Joe Melton, who finished 3-3, singled and scored from third on a Craig Corado RBI groundout. Eric Taylor then sent a double shot off the right field wall scoring Matt Cusick.
After six and a third innings of two-run baseball, Delmarva's Zach Britton (3-2) left the game with touted reliever Mick Mattaliano. Representing the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, Joe Melton singled to score Steve Brown. Down by two with two on the corners, shortstop Bryan Brown hit into a double play to put a halt on the Legends' rally in the first of two.
