Texas Legends News Release
Dallas, TX - Texas Legends Care (a 501c3 non-profit organization) challenged diabetes by hosting a "Diabetes Game Day Challenge" at the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute (DHWI) at Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center in Dallas on Tuesday.
The "Challenge" consisted of basketball drills, strength and conditioning exercises, as well as overall fitness tips conducted by Texas Legends coaches and front office personnel. With more than 120 children from Southern Dallas in attendance, the impact of the Challenge could not only be seen in the effort being put forth, but also in the smiles on the children's faces.
Diabetes is a growing epidemic in the United States with recent estimates projecting that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes by 2050.
"Our sincere thanks to Texas Legends Care for supporting the âDiabetes Game Day Challenge', commented Venita Owens, V.P., Administrative Services and Business Development (DHWI).
"While we have conducted similar programs the past two years, this year's program was the best yet in terms of attendance - and we look forward to growing it in the future", added Andrea Hayes, Marketing and Events Coordinator. The Texas Legends take the fight against diabetes very seriously, and we are proud to be associated with them."
Estimates show that nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes, and every 20 seconds - the time it takes for a timeout in a basketball game - someone in the United States is diagnosed with the disease. On top of that, an estimated seven million people remain undiagnosed with type 2 diabetes which is why driving awareness through prevention programs such as the "Diabetes Game Day Challenge" is so essential to reaching children who may be at risk.
