Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
Drew Leenhouts was impressive in Salem-Keizer's 2-1 victory, striking out nine in seven one-run frames. (Mason Shoultz) The Volcanoes won their first series of the season Sunday night, defeating the Vancouver Canadians 2-1 in front of 3,062 at Volcanoes Stadium.Â
Shilo McCall broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning, muscling his first home run of the season, a solo shot, over the left field fence that proved to be the difference.Â
Volcanoes' starter Drew Leenhouts (1-0, 1.29 ERA) was tremendous for Salem-Keizer, scattering five hits while striking out nine. His lone mistake came in the first inning, when Lane Thomas deposited the first pitch he saw over the fence in center field for a solo home run.Â

The Canadians' lead was short lived, as the Volcanoes knotted things up in the second. Miguel Gomez led off the inning with a double to deep center field and later scored on a groundout by Julio Pena. Salem-Keizer then loaded the bases with two outs, but Junior Amion grounded out to second, ending the frame.Â
McCall blasted his homer two innings later and Salem-Keizer never looked back.Â
Reliever Jarret Leverett tossed a scoreless eighth for the Volcanoes in his first appearance of the season. Leverett was a member of the Frontier Greys last season - the same independent club that Volcanoes skipper Kyle Haines managed in 2014.Â
Eric Sim (1) fired a scoreless ninth for his first career save. Sim was a position player in the Giants' system the past five seasons before converting to a pitcher. Â
Starter Jon Wandling (0-1, 3.60 ERA) lasted four innings for Vancouver, allowing six hits and both Salem-Keizer runs.Â
The victory snapped a streak of seven consecutive series that Salem-Keizer had lost at the hands of the Canadians.Â
Up Next: The Volcanoes wrap up their series with Vancouver Monday night at Volcanoes Stadium. Mike Connolly, who tossed six scoreless innings against the College All-Stars on June 17, will start for the Volcanoes. First pitch is set for 6:35.Â
