Lee Leads Opening Night Shutout

Oklahoma City Comets News Release

Nashville, Tenn. - Zach Lee pitched six scoreless, efficient innings and combined with three relievers on a four-hit shutout in a 5-0 win over the Nashville Sounds at First Tennessee Park to begin the 2016 season. It's the first time the team pitched a shutout in the season opener since joining the Pacific Coast League in 1998.

After anchoring the OKC staff in 2015, Lee (1-0) started 2016 with another strong start. He scattered three hits over six innings, with no walks and two strikeouts. Lee faced just one over the minimum and induced two ground ball double plays. He threw just 63 pitches, a total that included 47 strikes.

Lisalverto Bonilla, Adam Liberatore, and Chin-Hui Tsao each followed with a scoreless inning to complete the shutout. The OKC pitching staff did not allow an extra-base hit and did not allow a runner to reach scoring position until there was one out in the ninth inning. No Nashville player reached third base, and the Dodgers held the Sounds 1-for-9 with runners on base. The quartet of pitchers combined to strike out seven and allow one walk.

At the plate, the Dodgers got off to a fast start in the first inning. Three batters into the game, Rob Segedin connected on a two-run homer to put the Dodgers on the board.

OKC scored twice more in the fourth. With a runner at first, Alex Hassan lined a single to right-center field. Nashville center fielder Tyler Ladendorf committed a two-base fielding error on the play, allowing Jose Tabata to score and Hassan to advance to third base. Hassan scored later in the inning on a RBI groundout by Elian Herrera.

Micah Johnson's speed keyed the Dodgers' final run in the seventh inning. Johnson reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced to second base on a throwing error. He stole third base and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Yasmani Grandal to make it 5-0. Johnson finished his OKC debut 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Segedin and Hassan joined Johnson with multi-hit games. Appearing on a rehab assignment, Grandal went 0-for-3 with a RBI.

Nashville starting pitcher Chris Smith was pegged with the loss. Smith (0-1) allowed four runs and four hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked three.

With the win, OKC improved to 13-6 in road openers since 1998. However, it's just the second time in the past five seasons the team won its overall opener.

The start of the game was delayed by rain for 45 minutes. It continued to rain on and off throughout the entire game, but there were no further delays.

The Dodgers will look to continue their early strong play when they face the Sounds at 6:35 p.m. Friday night. Live coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on AM 1340 "The Game," 1340thegame.com, or through the free iHeartRadio mobile app.
