BILOXI - Spencer Strider (W, 3-6) struck out eight over five innings as the Mississippi Braves earned a 7-2 victory over the Biloxi Shuckers in the final game of the series. The M-Braves three of four from the Shuckers, winning their league-best tenth series and upped the Double-A South lead to eight games with 12 remaining.

The magic number for the M-Braves to clinch is now eight. Pensacola, Birmingham, Rocket City, and Mississippi's next opponent, Montgomery are all within a half-game of each other for the second playoff spot.

The M-Braves opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Justin Dean started the game with a single to right field. Two batters later, Braden Shewmake singled on a line drive to centerfield, and Shea Langeliers followed with a walk. A wild pitch by Lucas Erceg (L, 2-6) scored Dean, and later in the at-bat, Drew Lubgauer walked. Hendrik Clementina then walked to take a 2-0 lead.

The M-Braves added to the lead in the top of the second inning. Jacob Pearson and Dean opened the inning with back-to-back walks. Trey Harris followed with a two-run double down the left-field line. After back to back outs, Robbie Hitt came in in relief of Erceg. Erceg finished with 1.2 innings, three hits, five walks, three strikeouts, and five earned runs. The next batter, Lugbauer, hit his 15th double of the season to right-centerfield to push the lead to 5-0.

The M-Braves added to the lead in the top of the 5th inning. Jalen Miller doubled with one out and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Miller came across to score on Pearson's RBI fielder's choice to extend the lead to 6-0.

Troy Bacon relieved Spencer Strider (W, 3-6) after five innings of work. Strider went 5.0 innings with two hits, one walk, eight strikeouts, and zero earned runs. Over the former Clemson star's last two games, he has given up just one run on five hits with 18 strikeouts and two walks. Strider has 138 strikeouts in 85.0 innings this season between Rome and Mississippi.

The M-Braves padded the lead in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by Trey Harris to push the lead to 7-0.

The Shuckers broke through on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cam Devanney scored on a wild pitch, and Mitch Longo hit a solo home run, his ninth on the year, to cut the lead to 7-2.

Will Latcham and Brooks Wilson added a combined 2.0 shutout innings of relief.

The first-place M-Braves will begin the final homestand of 2021 on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park. Montgomery will send RHP Adrian De Horta (2-3, 4.50) to the mound in game one against a to-be-determined starter for the M-Braves. The first pitch is 6:35 pm with coverage on 103.9 WYAB, mississippibraves.com, and MiLB.TV.

The final Mississippi Braves homestand is September 7-12, against the Montgomery Biscuits at Trustmark Park. The homestand features the last Thirsty Thursday of 2021, Drew Waters Statue Giveaway, Kid's Backpack Giveaway, First Responders and Military Appreciation Night on September 11, and Post-Game Fireworks.
