Lawson Donates to Fallen Patriot Fund

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (September 16, 2011) - Connecticut Sun guard Kara Lawson announced today she has chosen the Fallen Patriot Fund of the Mark Cuban Foundation as the recipient of a $5,000 donation in her name through the WNBA Cares Community Assist Award program.
"I felt it was important to honor those who honor us as Americans every day through their commitment to freedom," Lawson said, explaining her choice. "I am grateful for the ultimate sacrifice military families make. The Fallen Patriot Fund impacts these families in their time of need. I couldn't think of a better way to express my gratitude to these heroes and their loved ones."
As the WNBA Cares Community Assist Award winner for June, Lawson had the opportunity to select the charitable organization that would receive the donation from the league.
The Fallen Patriot Fund of The Mark Cuban Foundation was established to help families of U.S. military personnel who were killed or seriously injured during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
"We are very appreciative of Kara's support of the Fallen Patriot Fund," Mark Cuban said in a statement. "One hundred percent of the contribution will go directly to those who have served our country and in need! Thank you so much!"
The WNBA has been recognizing players with the Community Assist Award since 2001. This is the first time Lawson has been honored.
"Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 this past week, was a somber and reflective experience," Lawson said. "It reminded me of how fortunate we are to live in this great country. There are men and women who embody the American spirit and carry it with them wherever they go. The men and women of our United States Military are beacons of our ideals."
