Laurie Byrd Named Liberty Assistant Coach

New York, NY -- January 5 -- Laurie Byrd has been named assistant coach of the New York Liberty, it was announced today by team president and general manager Carol Blazejowski. As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 2010 WNBA season will be Byrd's second on the New York sidelines, having joined the Liberty as an interim assistant coach on August 10, 2009. Her main responsibilities include assisting head coach Anne Donovan in player development, game preparation and scouting, in addition to planning practices and individual player workouts.

The Flint, MI native has previously served as an assistant with the Detroit Shock (2003-2005), when they captured the 2003 WNBA Championship, and the Houston Comets (2007). She first entered the coaching ranks at the University of Detroit as an assistant for three seasons (1999©0, 2000©1, 2001©2). A Eastern Michigan University graduate, Byrd played in the inaugural season of the American Basketball League (ABL) for the Atlanta Glory (1996), followed by the San Jose Lasers (1997).

The Liberty will tip off its 14th season on Sunday, May 16 versus the Chicago Sky at Madison Square Garden. Season ticket plans are available now by calling 212-465-6073. Individual game tickets will go on sale in the spring.
