Late Surge Not Enough, C's Lose to Spokane
June 29, 2022 - Northwest League (NWL)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - The Vancouver Canadians showed late life Tuesday night at Nat Bailey Stadium, but it wasn't enough in a 6-4 loss to the Spokane Indians (Rockies) to start a six-game homestand as part of Canada Day week on Ontario Street.
Trailing 6-3 to start the ninth, the C's used a lead-off hit by pitch to manufacture a run with a stolen base, an error, a walk and a sacrifice fly to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but a strikeout ended the threat and handed the Indians a game one win to even the season series at five games apiece.
Spokane got to starter Sem Robberse (L, 3-4) for two runs in the first but the #7 Blue Jays prospect went on to toss four scoreless and logged five innings for the first time in three weeks.
Vancouver got on the board in the fifth thanks to a pair of walks and a Steward Berroa RBI single, his first of two run-scoring hits in the game. His RBI double in the bottom of the seventh came after the Indians had scored four unearned runs in the top of the seventh with a couple of two-RBI extra base hits that came with two outs after an error started the stanza.
The C's made it 6-3 in the eighth when Zach Britton doubled to start the inning and later scored on a Harry Ray single that got lost in the lights.
Berroa paced the offense with his two hits. Anthony Morales extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the seventh. Mark Simon was the only Canadians pitcher to not allow a run.
The series continues with a RBC We Care Wednesday tomorrow night. #22 Blue Jays prospect Chad Dallas goes for Vancouver opposite Spokane's Tony Locey. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. with coverage on CanadiansBaseball.com, MiLB.TV and the Sportsnet Radio Network.
