Victoria HabourCats News Release

The moral victories are piling up for the Victoria HarbourCats, who got a strong pitching performance from starter Mikey Wright on Wednesday night in a game against the Bend Elks at Sports Traders Diamond.

The HarbourCats also were error-free, and outhit the Elks 9-8. But single runs in each of the final three innings turned a deadlocked game into a 4-1 Bend victory and an Elks sweep of the three-game set in Victoria.

In front of a crowd of 1,073, Wright went seven strong innings, giving up just four hits and two earned runs. He walked two and fanned six, but took the loss when the HarbourCats couldn't get the timely hit needed to take better advantage of the 11 baserunners. Preston Ryan gave up two runs, including a home run, and struck out four in two innings.

Jake Thompson was the winning pitcher, and his catcher, Grant Newton, had the game's lone home run. HarbourCats batters struck out 11 times. Offensive stars were Gunner Pollman, who was 2-3, and a pair of 2-4 performers, Hunter Mercado-Hood and Alan Baldwin. The HarbourCats had a potential rally thwarted in the fourth inning by an awful call by home plate umpire Joe Bilyeu, who somehow ruled batter Bryce Greager interfered with Newton.

The HarbourCats, who have lost seven WCL games in a row and now have a 5-10 record, have a day off on Thursday but will be involved with the Big Bike Ride for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, continuing the team's record of community support across many platforms. The HarbourCats lost seven of eight on the homestand, the win being a 5-0 shutout of the PIL's Langley Blaze in an exhibition tilt.

On Friday, the HarbourCats go to Kelso/Longview, Washington, to play the Cowlitz Black Bears in a series the runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The team is back on Monday for Times Colonist Fireworks Night, a much-anticipated June 30 game (www.harbourcats.com/tickets), and then the team has a Canada Day festival planned for July 1, the team's first afternoon affair (1:05pm) with skydivers and a special pre-game ceremony focused on Canadian patriotism.

On Wednesday, July 2, it's Elvis Night, sponsored by Pacific Rim Exteriors. Maple Leaf Meats will be giving out free hotdogs for kids at that game.
