Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â The Suns' bullpen performed unusually poorly in an 11-6 loss to the Carolina Mudcats on Monday in front of 3,118 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The bullpen, which had allowed three earned runs in its previous 51 innings at home, collapsed, giving up 11 runs to the Mudcats over the final three innings.
The Suns (24-25) took a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning on Tarrik Brock's two-run single. He moved to second on a throw to the plate, stole third on the next pitch and scored on a passed ball on the following pitch.
That was about the end of the good news for Jacksonville, which kept a scoreless tie in tact thanks to five shutout innings from starter Edwin Jackson. Mudcats starter Ryan Snare (4-0) was credited with the victory because of some late offensive output.
In the seventh, reliever Lino Urdaneta (0-5) gave up six runs on seven hits. To make matters worse, Suns catcher Bill Duplissea injured his knee in a home plate collision with Chris Aguila and had to leave the game. He will likely miss significant time.
Suns manager Dino Ebel didn't see any of it, however. He was ejected from the game in the third inning for arguing balls and strikes.
Promoted to the Suns prior to game time, right-hander Jason Frasor pitched the eighth trailing, 6-3. He gave up five singles â four in succession â and three runs in his double-A debut.
The Suns scored thrice in the bottom of the inning, getting to within 9-6. But Jacksonville stranded the bases loaded with one out in the seventh and eighth innings without converting.
A third reliever, Will McCrotty, allowed a two-run home run to Drew Niles in the ninth, capping the scoring. Niles went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI despite entering the game on a double switch in the seventh inning.
Brock led the Suns with three hits and three RBI.
Right-hander Alfredo Gonzalez (1-0, 0.00) is scheduled to face Orlando Rays righty Matt White (no record) at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Cracker Jack Stadium in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The Suns will open a four-game series with the Rays before returning to the Baseball Grounds on Saturday vs. Tennessee.
