Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
NORMAL, IL - Corey Bass broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run hit in the eighth inning to give the ThunderBolts a 4-2 win over the Normal CornBelters at The Corn Crib Saturday night.
Coco Johnson and Riley Krane singled and Kyle Wood walked to load the bases for the ThunderBolts (33-25) in the first inning. They got their first two runs on a bloop single from Tim Zier to jump out to the early lead.
Charlie Gillies pitched out of the first, leaving the bases loaded and allowing just the two runs. He settled in and gave up just another four hits in his 7.1 innings in the game.
Zac Westcott got off to a great start for the Bolts and did not allow a hit through the first three innings. Normal (28-31) finally got their offense going in the fifth. With one out, Craig Lepre singled, Ty Morris doubled and Diego Cedeno doubled them both home to tie the score.
It remained tied into the eighth when Larry Balkwill started a Windy City rally with a walk. Kyle Wood followed with a single and pinch runner Will Krug made it all the way to third. Zier was hit by a pitch to load the bases in front of Bass, who hit the ball to the wall but was held to a single, scoring Krug and Wood to put the Bolts back ahead.
Normal did not threaten over the final two innings as the ThunderBolts' bullpen threw 3.1 scoreless innings. Patrick Ledet (1-0) picked up his first pro win with a scoreless inning and a third and Brian Loconsole pitched the ninth for his 21st save.
Gillies (4-6) took the loss for Normal, allowing four runs in 7.1 innings.
The ThunderBolts look for the series win in Normal on Sunday. TJ Santiago (1-2, 5.16) will make the game three start against the CornBelters' Scott Sebald (5-1, 3.36). First pitch from the Corn Crib is scheduled for 4:35 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
