New Jersey Jackals News Release

The Jackals wrapped up a three game series against the Quebec Capitales on Sunday afternoon from Yogi Berra Stadium, looking for their second sweep of the season.

In the first two games, the Jackals offense was mostly dormant until the later innings. On this day, they would score almost immediately. After Alberto Rodriguez worked a scoreless top of the first, Dean Green and David Harris provided some run support.

Green, the Jackals slugging first baseman, launched the first pitch of his at bat from Quebec pitcher Ryan Searle over the right field wall to give the home side a 1-0 advantage. Centerfielder David Harris would follow with a shot that rode the wind over the centerfield wall for a 2-0 lead, his first since recording 2 against Rockland on June 19.

Quebec would narrow the deficit to one in the top of the second when 2B TJ White was hit by a pitch and later came around to score on a Jordan Serena single, making it 2-1 Jackals. They would then knot the game at 2 apiece in the fifth after a walk to Serena, a sacrifice bunt by 1B Lachlan Fontaine and an RBI double by SS Yordan Manduley.

The Capitales got a power surge of their own in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Left Fielder James McOwen led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. TJ White came up for the third time on the day and after working a 3-1 count, deposited a ball over the right-center field wall, his first homer of the year, making it 4-2 Quebec.

With the score still 4-2, the Jackals attempted another late inning rally in the 8th. Harris ripped a two out double to start the charge, which was followed by a Seth Spivey walk. Nolan Meadows stepped to the dish and popped an RBI single just over the glove of a leaping TJ White at second, pulling the Jackals within one, 4-3. Designated hitter Andy Mocahbee struck out to end the threat.

Quebec would restore the two run lead in the top of the ninth as Rodriguez (who was well over 100 pitches, but remained in the game due to lack of available relievers) allowed four of the first five batters he faced in the frame to reach base, including an RBI single by Manduley, putting the Capitales up 5-3. Rodriguez was then lifted for Rony Cabrera who was playing 3rd base to start the day. Cabrera would allow a sacrifice fly from Quebec's third baseman Brad Antchak, making it 6-3, before forcing a fly out to end the frame.

The Jackals weren't done yet. In the bottom of the ninth, they loaded the bases on the strength of three straight singles by catcher Kevin Torres, Cabrera and Shortstop Carlos Triunfel. Jordan Hinshaw recorded the fourth single of the inning, knocking in two, once again leaving New Jersey down by 1, 6-5. After back-to-back strikeouts by Dean Green and David Harris, Seth Spivey grounded out to second to end the threat and the game.

The Jackals fall to 18-16 on the season and 4-6 against Quebec. Ryan Searle (6-2) recorded the win while Alberto Rodriguez (2-4) was handed the loss. Nolan Becker picked up his team leading 4th save for Quebec. The Jackals will have Monday off and return to action Tuesday, June 26th against Salina.
