
Late Loss as Bullpen Struggles on Monday for Quakes

?Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Modesto Nuts rallied for six runs over the final two innings and cameup with their second straight win over the Quakes, as Rancho dropped the finalgame of the series by a final of 8-6 on Monday afternoon at LoanMartField.
Dustin May pitched into the seventh inning and the Quakesslugged a pair of two-run homers on Monday afternoon, but the bullpen had atough day, as the Quakes suffered their first series loss since before theAll-Star Break.
May allowed three runs on seven hits over seven andtwo-thirds innings, but walked the final batter he faced, setting up a roughstretch for the bullpen.
Connor Strain came into the game with Rancho up by three andgave up an infield hit to Kevin Santa, then surrendered a game-tying two-outhomer to Gareth Morgan, as Modesto tied the game at 5-5.
Strain (0-2) surrendered three more in the ninth, as Modestotook a commanding 8-5 advantage.
The Quakes got a run back in the last of the ninth againstModesto reliever Seth Elledge (5-1), as Cody Thomas knocked in his fourth runof the game, a sac fly that plated Gavin Lux to round out the scoring at 8-6.
Thomas and Jared Walker both finished with two hits and eachhad a two-run homer.
The Nuts got the game's first run in the opening inning, asNick Zammarelli smashed one inside the right-field foul pole for his eighthhomer of the year and a 1-0 lead.
Thomas answered for Rancho in the third, as he took Modestostarter Ljay Newsome (5-8) deep to right for his 12th of the year, giving theQuakes the lead for good at 2-1.
An RBI double in the fifth from Thomas added to the Rancholead, as they made it a 3-1 game.
Modesto picked up a leadoff triple by Beau Branton in thesixth, with Zammarelli following with an RBI single, cutting Rancho's lead to arun at 3-2.
But Walker homered in the bottom half of the inning, hissixth of the year and fourth in as many games, a two-run blast to make it 5-2.
Rancho (59-43, 24-8) will hit the road on Tuesday, headingto San Jose for three, followed by Modesto for three more, before returning toLoanMart Field on Tuesday, July 31st.
Ben Holmes (0-0) is scheduled to throw for the Quakes in theopener in San Jose, while the Giants will counter with Logan Webb (1-2), withfirst pitch scheduled for 7:00pm from Municipal Stadium.
