Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET, IL - Led by a big 1st inning, a strong start from Matt Quintana and a clutch performance from Peyton Isaacson, the Joliet Slammers outlasted the River City Rascals at home Wednesday night.
Harrison Bragg brought in the first run of the game in the bottom of the 1st on a single to center field with the bases loaded. Isaacson followed that up in the next at-bat by drawing a walk that brought Chaz Meadows home from third. In his first career plate appearance for the Slammers, Jimmy Roche drew another walk, allowing Dash Winningham to score.
Rascals starter Alex Winkleman was then pulled in favor of Andrew Vernon, who inherited another bases-loaded situation with just one out in the inning. He sat down the Slammers' next two hitters in order however, and the Slammers took a 3-0 lead into the 2nd.
Neither side would score again until the top of the 5th, when Andrew Penner singled to center with runners at the corners and two outs, bringing in Nolan Meadows from third. Quintana would work himself out of the jam on the next batter, sitting down Trevor Achenbach on a fly out to right field. The Slammers did not answer in their half, ending the 5th with a 3-1 Slammers lead.
Following a scoreless 6th and 7th, the Rascals rallied in the top of the 8th, taking advantage of the pitching change from Quintana to Isaac Sanchez. The Rascals would put runners on second and third with no outs before Sanchez was pulled in favor of Mario Samuel. Samuel was unable to work out of the jam, as Andrew Penner and Achenbach scored to tie the game. The Slammers responded in their half on a two-run homerun to right field from Isaacson, taking a 5-3 lead into the 9th.
Relieving Samuel, Ryan Koziol sat down the Rascals in order to earn his 10th save of the season and securing a Slammers win.
Tonight's Merchants and Manufacturers Bank Player of the Game is Peyton Isaacson (1-3, 3 RBIs, 1 HR, and 1 BB).
The Slammers square off against the Rascals again tomorrow at 7:05 at DuPage Medical Group Field in the rubber match of this three-game series.
