Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH- Out of a three round shootout, the Phantoms score two, to beat the Dubuque Fighting Saints 4-3 at the Mystique Ice Center in Dubuque, IA.
Ten seconds into Youngstown's third power play of the night, Brett Murray would find Jack Malone in front of the net to open up the scoring at 14:42 in the first.
On Dubuque's second power play, Logan Pietila would tie the game at 4:07 in the second period. Soon after the game started to get chippy. Fighting Saint's J.D. Greenway, and Phantoms Josh DeLuca would get coincidental penalties for unsportsmanlike misconduct. Hustling out of the box, Greenway would be ready for a nice feed from James Sanchez for Dubuque's second goal 18:02 into the third, giving them a one goal lead.
Just under the midway point in the third, James Sanchez would feed Matias Macelli to give Dubuque a two goal lead. A couple minutes later the Fighting Saints would find themselves down two men for a just over a minute. With 32 seconds left in the five on three, Joey Abate would deflect a wrist shot from Matt DeMelis, to decrease their deficit to one, with 6:35 remaining in the third. The Phantoms would opt for an empty net with 2:47 remaining in third period which would prove beneficial as Liam Dennison ties the game at 17:30 in the third.
The overtime period would be an exciting one as both teams had plenty of scoring chances, with both goalies blocking every shot on net.
In the first round of the shootout both Matt DeMelis and Logan Pietila would not score. The second round found both teams scoring from the hands of Jack Malone and Riese Garber. Connor MacEachern would score for the Phantoms in the third round, while Jon Mor stopped James Sanchez for the Phantoms first win of the season.
The Phantoms finish off their three game tour of Iowa tomorrow night against the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders.
