Peoria Rivermen News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Peoria Rivermen capitalized on a long power play late in the game, scoring three times during the extended advantage to seal a 5-2 win over the Fayetteville FireAntz on Saturday at Crown Coliseum.
The Rivermen lit the lamp first on a power play goal by Mike Gurtler assisted by Jake Trask and Alex Hudson in a flurry at the top of the crease with 2:05 remaining in the opening period for a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
Peoria's lead increased to 2-0 with 6:36 left in the second period when Dan Bremner wristed a drive from the left circle off the shoulder of FireAntz goalie Kevin Murdock and into the net. The hosts scored with 4:31 showing before the second intermission when the puck popped high in the air in front of the crease on a rush and into the path of Trevor Hertz, who buried a short blast to cut the Rivermen lead to 2-1 at the break.
The FireAntz knotted the score at 2-2 with 10:03 remaining in regulation when Josh McQuade converted a back-door feed from Trever Hertz at the bottom of the left circle.
The Rivermen took control of the game after Fayetteville's Tyler Sheldrake was ejected with 9:18 remaining for instigating an altercation and earning a match penalty. Peoria scored three times on the ensuing long power play on tallies from Summers, Gurtler and Trask.
Dustin Carlson earned the win over his former teammates with 25 saves while Kevin Murdock sustained the loss despite stopping 50 shots. The Rivermen were 4-for-6 on power plays while the FireAntz were 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
The road trip concludes with a Sunday face-off at 3:05 p.m. Central with the FireAntz before the Rivermen return home for Thursday and Friday contests with the Knoxville Ice Bears.
