Elmira Pioneers News Release
Elmira, NY- An eighth inning error turned into a run for the visiting Northeast League Aces and ended up being the deciding run in a 4-3 Pioneers loss on Saturday night.
The Aces took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Chad Gambill's third homerun of the season, a two-run homer to left. But the Aces lead would evaporate in the second as Jeremy Dodson walked and then scored on Steve Checksfield's RBI triple to make it 2-1. Checksfield would then come home one batter later on Ryan Smith's sacrifice fly to the second baseman, tying the game at two. In the fourth the Aces would retake the lead on Jason Torres' RBI single and once again the Pioneers battled back, evening the score in the fifth on an RBI single from Dodson. In the eighth the Aces got two runners on with one out when Mike Davis hit a come-backer to the Pitcher that appeared to be a doubleplay. But Cleatus Davidson couldn't handle the throw, allowing Yohanny Valera to score the eventual game-winning run.
The Pioneers threatened in the ninth as Davidson drew a one out walk, but was picked off at first base. Yuji Nerei then hit a two out single, but Aces closer Angel Miranda was able to strike Dodson out to end the game.
Starting Pitcher Joe Van Gorder got a no-decision yielding three runs in six innings of work. Saul Solveson got stuck with the tough loss after allowing just one unearned run in three innings.
