Jackals edge cutters in dramatic fashion

Little Falls, NJ – In the bottom of the ninth, the Jackals would reign supreme, pushing across the winning run, defeating the Cutters, 5-4.

The Jackals offense jumped into gear in the bottom of the first. Zack Smithlin scored John Anderson on a single, and Wady Almonte also notched an RBI on a single.

In the top of the second, Jeff Brooks, of New Haven, doubled, scoring Aaron Fera, making it a 2-1 ballgame.

New Jersey would regain the run in the following inning. Kevin Grijak continued to push across runs, this time with a bases loaded sac fly.

The Cutters would even the score at three in the top of the third. With two outs, and runners at second and third, Aaron Fera singled scoring both runners.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI single by Craig Conway gave t he Jackals the lead once again.

With the ballgame on the line in the bottom of the ninth, Hector Lebron tripled with two outs, scoring Jeff Brooks, tying the ballgame at four runs a piece.

But in the bottom of the ninth, Chris Rowan would lead off the inning with a triple. The Cutters would intentionally load the bases. Craig Conway then came up and hit a sac fly into center, scoring Rowan, giving the Jackals the victory.

New Jersey start Joel Bennett pitched six innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits, six walks, while striking out eight. Fabricio Benitez got the win in relief.

Ryan Bonesio pitched six and two thirds innings for New Haven. He gave up four earned runs, on nine hits, while walking four. Reliever Greg McCarthy pickup up the loss in relief.

The New Jersey Jackals go back on the road on Monday, August 9, 2004. The team will be in Bangor until Wednesday evening, as they play the Bangor Lumberjacks for the first time since early June. On Tuesday, August 3, 2004, Jackals' starting pitcher Aaron Myers was named the Rawlings Northeast League Player of the Month. Myers went 4-1 in the month of July, with a 1.06 ERA. In 34 innings of work, Myers scattered 29 hits while striking out 38. Also during the month, Myers tossed a complete game, seven inning shutout of the Elmira Pioneers, in which he struck out eleven batters. At the time of the award, Myers was second in the Northeast League in strikeouts with 75.

The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning. New Jersey held a 3-0 lead over Elmira, partially due to a two-run homerun by Jay LaFlair. Because of the rain, the Elmira grounds crew worked till after the scheduled start time to get the field playable. The game did not get underway till after 9:00 p.m. The game will be continued on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 5:00 p.m., at Yogi Berra Stadium. The first game will begin in the bottom of the third, and will go a full nine innings. The second contest will be seven innings.

The New Jersey Jackals will be holding its 2nd annual NJ PETS Dog Days of Summer on Sunday, August 15, 2004, at Yogi Berra Stadium. It is an opportunity to bring your dog to the ballpark, participate in free giveaways, get portraits, and receive interesting literature on dog grooming provided by NJ PETS, Best Friend's Photography, and Mike's Feed Farm. The ballgame is scheduled to begin at 5:05 p.m., but those who arrive by 4:00 p.m. will have the opportunity to take their dog onto the field and participate in a pet tricks contest.

The Jackals will also be holding a blood drive at Yogi Berra Stadium, on Tuesday, August 17, 2004. A Bloodmobile will be located at the ballpark.
