New Haven County Cutters News Release
(Little Falls, NJ- August 7, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters rallied in the top of the ninth to tie the game at four, but Craig ConwayÂfs RBI sac fly in the bottom of the ninth scored Chris Rowan to give the New Jersey Jackals a 5-4 win at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday Night. In the ninth against New Jersey closer Fabrizio Benitez, Jeff Brooks led things off with a RBI single. Brooks then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Billy Rich. After P.J. Johnston flew out to deep left field, Hector Lebron came to the plate with the Cutters down to their last out. The New Haven first basemen came up clutch, hitting a RBI triple into the right center field gap tying the game at four. In the bottom of the inning, JackalsÂf shortstop Chris Rowan hit a leadoff triple against lefty reliever Greg McCarthy setting up the inning for New Jersey. The Cutters then walked the next two batters intentionally to create a force at any base, but Craig Conway lifted a fly ball to center that was deep enough to score Rowan with the game winnings run. Fabrizio Benitez (2-2) picks up the win for the Jackals. Greg McCarthy (0-4) took the loss. After New Jersey jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on RBI singles from Zack Smithlin and Wady Almonte, New Haven cut the lead in half in the second on a two out RBI double by third basemen Jeff Brooks making it a 2-1 ballgame. The Jackals regained their two run lead in the bottom of the frame as with the bases loaded and one away, DH Kevin Grijack hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Craig Conway and giving Jersey a 3-1 lead. The Cutters answered right back in the third to tie the game. P.J. Johnston led things off with a single to right and then advanced to second on an error by JackalÂfs right fielder Wady Almonte. Two batters later, Jimmy Hurst walked putting runners on the corners with one out. Later in the inning with two outs and runners on second and third, Aaron fera delivered a two RBI single knotting the game at three. In the bottom of the fifth, the Jackals put runners on first and second with one out for Alberto Vasquez. The New Jersey catcher hit a deep fly ball to left field that sent Kevin Forbes back to the wall. Forbes made a leap for the ball and caught it over the fence, robbing Vasquez of a three run homer. The defensive gem only kept the game tied momentarily as the next batter, Craig Conway, hit a RBI single giving the Jackals the lead back at 4-3. New Jersey starter Joel Bennett went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and struck out seven. New Haven starter Ryan Bonesio tossed six and 2/3 innings, surrendering four runs on nine hits. Both took no decisions. Cutters shortstop Jose Mateo was thrown out of the game in the sixth for arguing balls and strikes. As a result, New Haven made several defensive changes including moving outfielder Kevin Forbes to second base for the first time this season. The Cutters return home next for a three game home stand that begins on Monday August 9th at 7:05pm.
