Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER-- The Clearwater Threshers escaped with a 6-5 victory on Friday night against the Dunedin Blue Jays.
The ninth inning had its share of drama. After the Blue Jays (1-1) scored a run off of Lee Ridenhour to make the score 6-5, Gustavo Pierre was at first with Christian Lopes at the plate.
Lopes singled to center, but Pierre took a large turn around second and was tagged out by JP Crawford halfway between second and third. Lopes then tried to advance to second after the rundown, but when Crawford tried to throw to second, Lopes was ruled out because the throw hit Pierre while he was in the baseline.
The ruling was that Lopes was out on runner's interference, and the game was over. Ridenhour pitched two innings of relief to earn his fifth save of the season.
The Threshers (1-1) gave starter Ethan Stewart (4-6) a 5-0 cushion through two innings. In the top of the first, Clearwater put up three runs off of Dunedin starter Jesse Hernandez (3-5), highlighted by Art Charles' fourth home run of the season.
In the second inning, the Threshers tacked on two more with Brian Pointer's fourth big fly of the year, as well as a KC Serna sacrifice fly.
Dunedin got on the scoreboard in the top of the third after Lopes deposited his first homer of the year to bring in three runs and cut the Clearwater lead to 5-3.
Stewart lasted five innings to get the win. He allowed four runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three.
The Blue Jays crept within a run in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning, a Brandon Short sacrifice fly gave the Threshers a two-run lead.
Jordan Guth, Miguel Gonzalez, and Ridenhour combined for four innings out of the bullpen. The trio allowed two hits, a run, and struck out three.
In his second game with Clearwater, JP Crawford finished 0-for-3 with two walks. He saw at least four pitches in each plate appearance.
Clearwater starts a three game series with the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Saturday from Bright House Field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and coverage begins at 6:15 on threshersbaseball.com.
Saturday will also feature an appearance from the world-famous Phillie Phanatic, as well as a post-game fireworks spectacular.
