Las Vegas takes down Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers (34-27) dropped game two of their three-game series against the Las Vegas 51s (25-38) by a final score of 5-4 on Saturday night at Cheney Stadium.

First baseman D.J. Peterson put together his best performance of the season at the plate, finishing the game 4-for-5 with one home run and two RBI. Rehabbing right fielder Mitch Haniger (2x3, R, BB) and designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach (2x5, RBI) also chipped in with multiple hits.

Rainiers starting pitcher Dillon Overton worked 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits (one home run). He walked one and struck out one while not factoring into the decision.

Peterson launched the Rainiers out to an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run off the façade of the R Yard in left field - it was his eighth home run of the season.

Las Vegas cut into Tacoma's lead, and snapped the Rainiers scoreless innings streak, with a solo home run off the bat of Josh Rodriguez in the top of the second. Tacoma quickly moved their lead back out to two runs at 3-1 on a sacrifice fly from second baseman Zach Shank that scored Haniger in the bottom of the third.

After a pair of scoreless frames, the Las Vegas offense came to life with a four-run top of the sixth that snatched them a 5-3 lead over Tacoma. Rodriguez's second home run of the night, a two-run blast to right field, capped the scoring for the 51s.

Tacoma scored once more in the bottom of the sixth when Vogelbach legged out an RBI infield single that narrowed the Las Vegas lead to one run at 5-4.

Mark Lowe (2-3) took the loss for the Rainiers after allowing three runs on three hits over 0.2 innings of work in the sixth. Casey Lawrence (1.0 IP) and Nick Hagadone (2.0 IP) held the 51s scoreless over the remainder of the game and allowed just one combined hit with four strikeouts.

Rehabbing right-hander Felix Hernandez (0-0, 22.50) will start for Tacoma as they wrap up their series with Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon. The 51s will send right-hander Rafael Montero (0-1, 1.57) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. PT.
