Aces Out-Clawed by 'Cats

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Reno Aces took on the Sacramento River Cats from Raley Field on Saturday night in the second game of a three-game series. Right-hander, and University of Nevada alum, Braden Shipley got the start for Interim Manager Greg Gross and the Aces. Shipley finished with five IP, seven K's and allowed five runs on six hits. Offensively, the Aces were led by Oswaldo Arcia who finished 2-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and a walk.

Sacramento got into the scoring column early, posting three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Reno would respond quickly with one of their own in the top half of the third inning. Braden Shipley drew a one-out walk, advancing to second after an Ildemaro Vargas ground out. The hottest hitter in baseball, Ketel Marte, drove in the starting pitcher with a soft line drive to center field for RBI number 33 of the season to narrow the River Cats lead to 3-1.

With the score at 3-1 in favor of Sacramento, the River Cats would add a fourth run in the bottom of the third inning. Conor Gillaspie led off with a walk. Chris Shaw moved Gillaspie up to third base with a one-out double and Justin Ruggiano brought in Gillaspie after a misplayed ground ball off the glove of Gold Glove winning third baseman Carlos Rivero. Sacramento would tack on another in the bottom half of the fourth inning to give them a 5-1 lead.

Zach Borenstein would lead off the top of the fifth with a base-on-balls. The speedy outfielder was driven in by Vargas with a laser to the left-field wall. The double gave Vargas 19 on the season, tying him with Travis Snider of Round Rock for second place in the Pacific Coast League. The single run in the top of the fifth would be the last of the evening for Reno, taking the 5-2 loss.

With the loss, Reno moves to 39-24 on the season. The Aces will look for a series victory tomorrow afternoon from Raley Field with southpaw Aaron Laffey on the mound. The first pitch is slated for 1:05 PM. Reno returns to Greater Nevada Field on June 17th where they will face the Las Vegas 51's.
