Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

For the third time in as many nights, the Corpus Christi Rayz went to overtime, but unlike the two prior nights, the Rayz could not come out on the winning side Sunday afternoon. Despite a Rayz lead for more than 35 minutes of play, Serge Dube scored in overtime to cap a Laredo Bucks comeback and give the Bucks a 2-1 win over the Rayz at the American Bank Center. Despite the overtime loss, the Rayz still reduced their magic number to five points (at the close of the game) from clinching a playoff spot and finished a fine week 2-0-1. The one-goal loss was the ninth in as many defeats suffered by the Rayz in 2007. Corpus Christi will continue their four-game homestand on Friday and Saturday Nights with back to back hostings of the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.

In a fast paced, back and forth opening period, the Rayz struck for the frame's only goal. Adam Powell and Kevin Watter worked the puck from the boards to Matt Turek at the top of the slot, where he ripped a shot past Eric Marvin at 15:09 to give the Rayz the early advantage. Brent Zelenewich was terrific in the opening frame making all 14 saves he had to as the Rayz were outshot 14-11 in the period.

In the second period, the teams played a scoreless frame. Zelenewich and Laredo's Eric Marvin remained strong in net. Corpus Christi outshot Laredo 11-10 in the frame.

In the third period, the Bucks forced overtime with their first goal of the night. Chris Korchinski snapped a shot through Zelenewich to tie the score at 10:58. The teams remained scoreless and for the third straight night the Rayz headed to overtime.

In the extra session, Serge Dube took a shot that trickled past Zelenewich and slid past the goalline to give the Bucks their third overtime win of the season over the Rayz. The Bucks one-goal win was their sixth of seven victories over Corpus Christi this season. The Rayz were saddled with their fifth 2-1 loss at home of 2007.

Zelenewich was terrific, making 33 saves on 35 shots, but took the overtime loss, falling to 11-8-3 on the year. Marvin was outstanding as well, making 33 saves on 34 shots to improve to 19-5-4. The Bucks outshot the Rayz 35-34. The Rayz went 0-2 on the power play and the Bucks went 0-1.
