Cotton Kings Game Night Preview
March 4, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release
3/4/07 - ARIZONA SUNDOGS (27-26-1) @ LUBBOCK COTTON KINGS (21-27-6)
- 5:05 PM CITY BANK COLISEUM
THE TEN SPOT
With ten games remaining in the regular season, the Lubbock Cotton Kings close out a three-in-three weekend and a span of eight games in ten days by hosting the Arizona Sundogs. Lubbock is coming off a huge 4-2 win last night over New Mexico, which has placed the Cotton Kings 12 standing points behind Southwest Division leading New Mexico and three standing points behind Rio Grande Valley, who holds the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. Lubbock is in demand of a win this evening, as Odessa will play Austin this evening and the winner (if in regulation) could possibly leap past Rio Grande Valley for the sixth and final playoff spot, since Rio Grande Valley is off tonight. An Odessa win in regulation would place them tied with Rio Grande Valley (probably the best scenario for Lubbock) and an overtime win would place a three-way tie with Rio Grande Valley, Austin and Odessa. An Austin win would place them a standing point ahead of Rio Grande Valley. Arizona also needs a win in attempt to catch New Mexico, as the Sundogs enter the game five standing points back of New Mexico. Arizona comes in on a two-game winless streak after just riding a seven-game winning streak.
THE SERIES
The Arizona Sundogs are making their third trip of the season to Lubbock for the fifth all-time meeting between the two teams. Arizona and Lubbock meet six times this season and this contest marks the fifth (of six) meeting between the two teams and the third and final scheduled in Lubbock. The series is tied at 2-2-0. Lubbock's Bobby Brown (3g,6a) leads the series with 9 points, while the Sundogs are led by Brent Kelly, who has a trio of goals and assists for six points.
THE LAST TIME
2/11/07 - Bobby Brown fired home two goals to help the Lubbock Cotton Kings gain a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Sundogs at City Bank Coliseum.
Simon Watson gave Lubbock the 1-0 lead as he slipped the puck past Arizona netminder Chris King at the 7:44 mark of the first period while shorthanded. The Sundogs tied up the contest 1:04 into the second period with a tally from David Svagrovsky. Lubbock's Bobby Brown made it a 2-1 contest as he fired the puck on net and it bounced over the left shoulder of King and into the net with 3:14 remaining in the second period. Following Brown's power play score, Kris Mayotte replaced King in net for Arizona.
Arizona bounced back for a second time in the contest with 9:07 remaining in regulation, as Svagrovsky grabbed his second goal of the evening to tie the game at 2-2. Brown matched Svagrovsky's total by lighting the lamp for the second time with 4:48 left in the third period, and the goal would stand as the eventual game-winner.
Arizona's Chris King made nine saves off of 11 shots on net in 36:46 of ice time. Sundogs Kris Mayotte suffered the loss in net, as he stopped 14-of-15 shots on goal in 22:34 of action. Lubbock's J.F. Perras made 42 saves off of 44 Sundog shots for the win. The Sundogs out-shot Lubbock 44-26 for the evening.
The Cotton Kings were 1-for-8 on the power play, while Arizona was 0-for-6 on the man-advantage. ROSTER CHANGES
