
Power Plays the Story in Sundogs 4-2 Loss to Odessa

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - After splitting a two-game series with the New Mexico Scorpions, the Arizona Sundogs traveled south to take on the Southwest Division Odessa Jackalopes. The two clubs would exchange leads throughout the contest but Odessa would come away with the victory, tallying three of four goals with the man advantage.
Arizona would find itself in a hole early giving Odessa three separate 5-on-3 advantages in the first four minutes of the game. The Jackalopes would only convert on one chance however as Steve Shrum would give his club an early 1-0 lead. Alex Dunn and Mike Rutter would set up Shrum for the power play goal 3:21 into the first period. The Sundogs would tie the game at the 8:14 mark as Cory Stillman would tally Arizona's first power play goal of the game from Chris Bartolone and Dmitri Leonov.
At 6:28 of the middle period Arizona would take its first lead of the night as Chris Bartolone would tally his first goal and second point of the night. Dan Laperriere and Leonov would collect assists on the play. The assist would be Leonov's fifth point in two games. The next two goals would be in favor of Odessa as they would regain a one-goal lead. The Jackalopes' Mike Ramsay would tie the game at two-goals apiece midway through the second on passes Rutter and Josh Legge. A little over five minutes later Rutter would grab his third point and first goal of the night squeezing the puck past Sundogs netminder Kris Mayotte. Legge would steal an assist on the power play goal.
Midway through the third Arizona would see its best chance of the period to tie the game as Sundogs forward Brad Mehalko would sneak through the Jackalopes defense and skate in alone on Odessa netminder Mike Gorman. Mehalko would go to the backhand but Gorman would come up with a big save. With 1:52 remaining in the contest Odessa would secure the win with their fourth goal on the night to push the score to 4-2. Pascal Bedard would skate in avoiding a sprawling Sundogs player and wrist the shot past Mayotte. The goal would be Odessa's third power play marker of the contest. Jeff Ewasko and Legge would assist on the goal.
Arizona netminder Kris Mayotte would appear in net for the Sundogs stopping 28 of 32 shots. The loss would be his first in seven starts after winning six straight. Mike Gorman would stop 34 of 36 shots in the win for Odessa. Arizona would convert on two power play chances, going 2-for-7 while the Jackalopes would go 3-for-8 with the man advantage.
The Sundogs now travel back north to take on the Lubbock Cotton Kings tomorrow at 4:05pm (Arizona time). The Sundogs have won 8 of their last 12 and look to gain ground on Southwest Division leading New Mexico. The Scorpions hold a five-point advantage over Arizona for first place in the division.
