Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Riding a seven-game winning streak, the Arizona Sundogs squared off against the New Mexico Scorpions for the second time in as many nights as both teams looked to gain two points in the tight Southern Conference playoff race. Despite outshooting the Scorpions 30-26, Arizona would trail the entire game. Dmitri Leonov would tally two goals and an assist, taking part in all three Sundogs' goals.

New Mexico would open a two-goal lead in the first period tallying a power play and shorthanded goal. The Scorpions first goal would come with the man advantage at 7:54 of the opening period as Mike Prpich would take passes from Craig MacDonald and Vladimir Hartinger, flicking the puck past Sundogs netminder Mike Wall. The Scorpions would take a 2-0 lead with three seconds left to play in the first as Christopher Robertson would find the back of the net shorthanded. Aaron MacInnis and Hartinger were credited with assists on the play.

Arizona would respond with their first goal of the night while on the power play at 14:59 of the second period. Dmitri Leonov would collect his first of two goals on the night from Dan Laperriere and Chris Bartolone to cut the Scorpions lead to one. Three minutes later New Mexico would regain a two-goal lead as Mike Falk would tally his 24th goal of the season from Lance Herauf and Rob Guinn. Much like the Scorpions of the first, Arizona would score in the closing seconds of the period. Ryan Steeves would fire the puck past the Scorpions' David Cacciola to cut the score to 3-2. David Svagrovsky and Leonov would help on the late-period goal. Arizona would outshoot New Mexico 16-4 in the period.

The Scorpions would waste no time in the third period regaining a two-goal lead just 24 seconds in. Jamie Herrington would nab New Mexico's fourth of the game with assists going to Konrad Reeder and Ryan McLeod. At 6:25 of the third Dmitri Leonov would notch his second of the game, this time shorthanded from Bartolone and Steeves on a tic-tac-toe pass play. The Scorpions would ensure victory with their second shorthanded goal of the game at the 16:39 mark. Prpich would grab his second goal of the night from Hartinger and MacDonald to give his club a 5-3 lead. Frustration would spill over with less than one minute to play in regulation as both teams would see multiple players on the ice involved in fights with 53 minutes in penalties being handed out between the two clubs.

Arizona netminder Mike Wall would see his first start since joining the Sundogs after being picked up by the Colorado Avalanche in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks on February 27. In his first start Wall stopped 21-of-26 shots in the 5-3 loss while David Cacciola backstopped the Scorpions to the win deflecting 27-of-30 shots. Both clubs converted just once on the man advantage with Arizona finishing 1-for-6 and New Mexico finishing 1-for-7.

The Sundogs next travel to Odessa for a tilt with the Jackalopes tomorrow night at 6:00pm (Arizona time). The Sundogs currently sit in second place in the Southwest Division five points back of first-place New Mexico.
