Lansing Lugnuts News Release
South Bend, Ind. - The Lansing Lugnuts split a doubleheader with the South Bend Silverhawks Tuesday night at Coveleski Stadium, taking game one 3-2 while dropping the nightcap 6-5. The win for Lansing coupled with a Great Lakes loss cut Lansing's magic number to clinch a playoff spot to two.
The Lugnuts were able to take game one in extra innings by defeating South bend 3-2 in eight frames.
With one out in the eighth, Brian Pettway was brought in to pinch hit for Jonathan Baksh. After fouling off several Craig Pfautz offerings, Pettway smacked a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall to give Lansing the final run of the game.
The Lugnuts took the lead when Matt Liuzza hammered his 13th home run of the season, a solo blast to left-center field in the second inning.
Lansing held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth when the SilverHawks were able to rally to tie the game. Lugnut starter Graham Godfrey retired the first ten batters before Matt Oxendine doubled into right field. Daniel Perales then tripled off of the center field wall to bring home Oxendine and make it a 2-1 game. Steve Mena later delivered a single that scored Perales to knot the game at 2-2.
Godfrey finished the game by tossing 6 2/3innings of two run baseball, but had to give way to Edgar Estanga in the seventh.
Estanga (1-1) notched his first win as a Lugnut, throwing the final 1 1/3 innings and allowing just one man to reach base.
Game two saw the Lugnuts drop a 6-5 decision to South Bend, as Lansing had to settle for a split of the doubleheader.
Lansing had a 1-0 lead in game two heading into the fourth inning. Pettway then drilled his second homer of the night, a two-run blast that put the Lugnuts ahead 3-0.
The Lugnuts were up 4-0 before South Bend rallied for a six-run fifth inning to take the lead. Tyler Jones started the scoring with an RBI double off of left field wall that plated Ricardo Sosa. Justin Brashear then smacked a single up the middle to bring home two more runs and cut the Lansing lead to 4-3. Daniel Perales's single then scored Brashear to tie the game at 4-4. Steve Mena then capped the scoring with a two-run homer to left-center that gave South Bend a 6-4 advantage.
Lansing threatened to comeback in the seventh, as they plated one run on a Travis Snider single. However the Lugnuts left two men on to end the game.
