Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities found offense hard to come by on Tuesday night at John O'Donnell Stadium, dropping both games of a doubleheader to the Clinton LumberKings, losing 4-3 in the opener and 2-0 in the nightcap.
Quad Cities (35-21, 73-52) was swept in a doubleheader for the first time this season, though they have pulled off the feat twice in 2007. Clinton (25-32, 66-58) got strong performances from their pitching throughout, holding the Swing scoreless in 13 of the 14 total innings played.
Game one was a contest marked by starting pitching, as Clinton's Zach Phillips (11-5) and Quad Cities' Tyler Herron (10-6) went toe-to-toe in a battle of 10-game winners.
Phillips ended up earning the victory, carrying a three-hit shutout into the seventh before eventually allowing three runs on six hits over 6.2 innings. Meanwhile, Herron threw 4.2 innings before allowing a base hit, but gave up hits to four of the last five batters he faced and took the loss despite fanning six without issuing a walk.
Herron's no-hit bid lasted into the fifth inning before a pair of two-out knocks. After hitting the first batter of the inning, the righty struck out two in a row. But Jay Heafner broke up the no-no with a double down the left field line to plate a run, and Josh Bradbury followed with an RBI-single to give the LumberKings a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth, back-to-back doubles by Marcus Lemon and Jose Vallejo chased Herron from the contest while adding to the lead. Two batters later, a groundball single by Mauro Gomez through a drawn-in infield scored Vallejo to extend the Clinton advantage to 4-0.
The Swing made a game of it in the bottom of the seventh, as a two-out, two-run single by Jose Garcia started a three-run rally that pulled Quad Cities to within one run. Antone DeJesus was at second with two outs when Jaime Landin bounced a ball to short that Lemon bobbled. But while Lemon was picking up the loose ball, DeJesus stumbled as he tried to put on the breaks after rounding third, and Clinton cut him down at the plate in a rundown to end game one.
Clinton's starting pitching was the story once again in game two, as Jeremiah Haar (6-3) and Josh Lueke (4) combined on a two-hit shutout. Haar went five scoreless while retiring 15 of the 17 batters he faced, and Lueke finished the job with two perfect innings for the six-out save.
The contest was scoreless until the top of the fourth, when Heafner led off the frame by blasting a 2-2 pitch out of the yard to left-center. David Paisano led off the next inning with a double, eventually crossing the plate on Manny Pina's sacrifice fly to push Clinton's advantage to 2-0.
Mike Schellinger (6-4) got the spot start for Quad Cites in the nightcap, but took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits over four innings. Despite the loss the righty was solid in his first start since April 27, when he was a part of the Swing's season-opening tandem starting rotation.
