Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - In the fourth game of the two teams' six-game season series, the Omaha Lancers dropped a close contest to the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday at Ralston Arena by a final score of 3-2. With the loss, the Lancers fell to 22-5-4 overall this season and with 48 points, remain alone atop the Western Conference and overall USHL standings.
In a slow-in-starting first period, it took until 10:46 for the Lancers to break the ice, as a go-ahead goal from future Princeton Tiger Matt Nelson delivered Omaha a 1-0 advantage thanks to leading USHL goal scorer Tyler Vesel's vision and a high-IQ centering feed from the league's top point-getter and a fellow Nebraska-Omaha Maverick of the future, Jake Randolph.
Des Moines forward Danny Elser got the bounce of a lifetime at 4:11 of the middle frame to tie the game at one by banking a wrister from below the goal line in the Omaha zone off the back of Lancers goalie Cole Bruns' jersey and into the net. Then in the final minute of the period, a burner from Ruslan Rakhmatov from the top of the left circle gave the Buccaneers the lead for the first time at 2-1.
After an extended run of chances for the Lancers in the third, Anthony Angello tied the game at 7:33 on feeds from Tucker Poolman and Luca Frigo, but a late R.J. Burns goal for Des Moines at 11:35 proved the game winner as the Buccaneers held on for a 3-2 victory, their first over Omaha this season.
Next up for the Lancers, it's a Saturday showdown with their arch-rivals, the Lincoln Stars at 7:05 pm at Ralston Arena on "TeamMates Night", presented by Land O Lakes, an evening that will feature a ceremonial puck drop performed by TeamMates co-founders Tom & Nancy Osborne. Full coverage of Saturday's game, in which the Lancers will sport specialty "TeamMates" jerseys that will be auctioned off to fans following the game with the proceeds going to benefit TeamMates, begins with the "Valpak Pregame Show" at 6:50 pm on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
In 2013-14, the five-time Anderson Cup and seven-time Clark Cup Champion Omaha Lancers drop the puck on their 28th season in the USHL. Season ticket packages for the Lancers' second campaign at the state-of-the-art Ralston Arena are available now starting at just $12.50 per game!
