Hawks Snatch Win from Fargo
January 3, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks led for less than a minute of regulation Friday but were still able to claim a 4-3 shootout victory at Young Arena against the Fargo Force.
The first 60 minutes ended and overtime began with the Black Hawks shorthanded, after the teams had traded the lead during the third period. Waterloo navigated the penalty-killing situation but found themselves in peril again during the shootout when John Baiocco scored on Fargo's first attempt. Peter Krieger saved the day in the third round, beating Fargo goaltender Brendan Jensen with a wrist shot to the stick side. The Hawks called on Blake Winiecki to keep the game going with a similar move on Waterloo's next attempt, after Jack Rowe had converted Fargo's fourth try. Finally in the sixth frame, Liam Pecarao stickhandled across the goalmouth and slipped the puck past Jensen's right skate to bring the matchup to an end.
After frustrating the Black Hawks with regularity during 2012/13, Jensen did it again throughout Friday's contest. He turned away all 18 Waterloo first period shots and four power plays, including 1:33 of time on a two-man advantage. Mathias Israelsson prevented nine Force shots from breaking the scoreless deadlock before the first intermission.
With 1:59 remaining in the second, Fargo pulled ahead with a special teams goal. Biaocco scored from the left dot past a screened Israelsson. Prior to that point, the Hawks and Force had combined for nine fruitless power plays.
The offenses broke out completely in the third. Brandon Montour went to the net for a goal to tie the game, redirecting a feed from Pecararo at 4:30 in the midst of a six-on-five delayed penalty situation. During an unrelated power play less than four minutes later, Drew Melanson's one-timer from the right wing circle nudged Waterloo ahead for the first time. However, Mikey Eyssimont tied the game, then gave the Force a new lead with goals separated by less than three minutes astride the midpoint of the period. His first tally came off a sharp-angled chance during a power play at 9:02 and the second was the result of a turnover between the hashmarks. Undeterred, Mark Friedman forced the overtime with a blast from the high slot during a power play with 2:20 remaining.
The Hawks' 62 shots were the most by one team in one USHL game this season. Jensen faced 18 or more pucks in every period of regulation, plus five more in overtime. Israelsson earned the win with 28 saves and four shootout stops.
The Hawks are back in action on the road Saturday in a Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup matchup against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The next home game at Young Arena will be January 11th versus the Des Moines Buccaneers.
