Indiana Ice News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Former Indiana Ice and current Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson will once again have the opportunity to don the Red, White and Blue after being selected for the 2014 U.S. Men's Olympic Hockey Team for the upcoming Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia.
Opening Ceremonies for the 22nd Winter Olympics are scheduled for February 7, 2014. The U.S. Men's Olympic Hockey Team begins their portion of the competition on Thursday, Februrary 13 against Slovakia. Medal round competition begins Wednesday, February 19.
Carlson continues to be a strong presence in his fourth season in Washington. Through 40 games, he currently leads Caps' defensemen in goals (7) and is ranked second in points (15). The Colonia, NJ-native also leads the team in time on ice, averaging over 24 minutes per game.
While this is not Carlson's first time representing the United States in an international tournament, this will be the blueliner's first attempt at Olympic gold. Prior to his stint with the Capitals, he became the hero of the 2010 World Junior Championship in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with the overtime game-winning goal in the gold medal game against Team Canada.
Carlson immediately established himself as an elite USHL defenseman after joining the Ice in the 2007-08 season. Through 59 games, he finished second among league blueliners in points (43) and tied for second in goals (12). Carlson capped his USHL career after being the only player from the league to be taken in the first round of the 2008 NHL Draft (27th overall-Washington).
Catch Carlson's alma mater in action this weekend as the Indiana Ice host the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in a weekend double header from Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Friday (1/3) and Pan Am Pavilion on Saturday (1/4). Friday's contest begins at 7:05 pm and is presented by Ivy Tech Community College.
Group tickets are now on sale for all 2013-2014 Indiana Ice home games. Flex packages and additional ticket packages are available starting as low as $50. Special 4-game holiday ticket packages are also on sale for a limited time only. For more information, call the Indiana Ice at (317) 925-4423.
