Lancers Get Big Road Win
February 27, 2004 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Omaha Lancers News Release
After suffering back-to-back losses at Tri-City and Des Moines, the Lancers rebounded nicely with an impressive 6-3 win Tuesday night at Lincoln. River City fired 38 shots on goal and six different players scored in the win. Jeff Lerg stopped 25 of 28 shots he faced improving his record to 20-4-0.
The victory came despite the fact the Lancers played without one of their top scorers Paul Stastny and defenseman Brett Motherwell. Both sat out the game with injuries. Stastny is expected back in the lineup soon but Motherwell is out for the year with a broken leg.
The win moved the Lancers back into second place in the USHL West Division. With just over one month left in the season Tri-City remains the league leader with 73 points. The Lancers are six behind with Sioux City seven points out of first place.
Friday the Lancers and Stars meet again for the final time in the regular season. Saturday River City returns to the Mid-America Center for the first of three consecutive homes. Face off with Waterloo is set for 7:05pm.
Malone Making Mark
The Pittsburgh Penguins have the worst record in the NHL but don't blame former Lancer Ryan Malone. Malone, Lancer Class of '99, continues to rack up impressive numbers in his rookie season in the NHL.
"I lay it on the line and play with a lot of heart every shift," says Malone." You do what you have to do to get a chance and get noticed. I will do whatever it takes to win."
Malone is Pittsburgh's leading goal scorer with 19 and is second in points with 34. He has scored three game-winning goals, not bad since Pittsburgh has won only 12 games. Despite his team's struggles Malone is thrilled to be playing with the finest hockey players in the world.
"The Penguins are a great organization and I am so happy to be part of it," Malone says. "It is the best job in the world. I am enjoying life."
Malone also enjoyed his time with the Lancers. During the 1998-'99 season he was a one-time line mate of Jed Ortmeyer who is currently with the New York Rangers and Joe Motzko who recently grabbed a cup of coffee with Columbus.
"We were good," admits Malone, "but we came up short at the Nationals. It was still really a great year for me."
Part of the fun for Malone and hits mates was the treatment they received from Lancer fans.
"The fans, they were great," says Malone. "Playing juniors is a big thing in Omaha. After games you spend 20 minutes or so talking to fans and signing autographs just to show them appreciation for coming to the games; you need that support."
MAC Ice to Get Sweeping
The sport of broomball will be on display at the Mid-America Center this weekend when the Lancers host Waterloo. Unlike the annual media broomball games played during Lancer intermission, this version is more serious. The players compete in a local league and in April the group will host the National Indoor Broomball Tournament at Tranquility IcePlex.
Broomball is played on an ice hockey rink with rules and strategies similar to those of hockey. Players wear padded sponge-rubber shoes; to enhance traction on the slippery surface, and strike a ball the size of a small soccer ball with specially designed brooms made of corn-straw dipped in rubber or solid molded rubber, trying to score into a net that is guarded by a goaltender.
