Omaha Lancers News Release
Adam Chlapik netted two goals but it wasn't enough as the Omaha Lancers fell to the Dubuque Fighting Saints 4-3 Wednesday afternoon on Day 1 of the 2010 USHL Fall Classic. The four-day tournament, hosted in Sioux City, Iowa, continues tomorrow when the Lancers face off against Team USA's Under-18 squad at 7:05 PM. Omaha concludes its visit to the Fall Classic Saturday evening with its annual showdown against the Sioux City Musketeers.
After the Lancers fell behind less than half a minute into the contest on a goal by Dubuque's Tyler Lundey, Omaha responded with a pair of goals less than three minutes apart. First, Ken Babinski scored his first goal of the preseason with an unassisted marker 7:48 into the opening frame. Then, 10:24 into the first period, Chlapik gave the Lancers their first lead of the contest when he notched his first marker of the preseason. Jonathan Liau earned the only assist on the even strength marker.
Omaha doubled its lead a little over seven minutes into the second period when Chlapik found the back of the net again. J.D. Carrabino grabbed the only helper on the five-on-five tally, which gave the Lancers a 3-1 lead near the midway point of the game. Omaha then found itself in some penalty trouble and that allowed Dubuque to get back into the game. First, Reid Sturos was assessed a high sticking minor penalty which led to Vinny Saponari's power play marker from Joakim Ryan 10:04 into the period. Then, with Ryan Daugherty in the penalty box for cross checking, Dubuque evened the contest on a man advantage marker from TJ Moor. Lundey and Shane Sooth assisted on the power play goal scored 15:54 into the middle stanza. Finally, a late cross checking penalty to Omaha's Nathan Widman, led to the eventual game-winning goal as Sooth found the back of the net with just 17 seconds left in the period.
All told, the Fighting Saints went 3-for-4 on the power play in the second period and 3-for-5 with the man advantage in the game to earn the victory.
Dubuque's Matt Morris earned the win in goal turning aside 16 of 19 Omaha shots. Meanwhile, Christopher Holden suffered the loss in net for the Lancers after 12 saves on 14 shots. John Keeney started the game in goal for Omaha and earned a no-decision after 8 saves on 10 Dubuque shots through the game's first 30 minutes.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when they take on Team USA's Under-18 squad at the Tyson Event Center at 7:05 PM.
