Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - Nick Jenny came away with a three-point night and Michael Montambault scored twice as the Omaha Lancers opened up their five-game preseason schedule with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Lincoln Stars at Ralston Arena on Thursday night.
Lincoln took the lead just 1:52 into the game on a rebound left in front of the crease. After the initial save by Lancers' goaltender Zackarias Skog, Jack Badini located the loose puck and followed up to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. Liam Schioler picked up the lone assist on the goal.
Another rebound goal tied the game at one-goal apiece. While on the power-play, Nick Jenny and Mitch Perrault combined to put a shot on net that was denied by returning Stars' netminder Peyton Jones. Michael Montambault followed up and lifted the puck just under the crossbar to tie the game 1-1 with 13:07 left in the opening period.
Brannon McManus scored his first of the preseason after forcing a turnover. With 4:56 left in the opening frame, the rookie created a turnover and went in on a breakaway. As he got to the hash marks in the offensive zone, McManus let a shot go that beat Jones on the blocker side to give the Lancers a 2-1 advantage. The goal was unassisted.
Both sides made goaltending changes midway through the second period. Lincoln replaced Peyton Jones with Cayden Primeau with 10:42 to go and Lancers inserted Zach Driscoll for Zackarias Skog with 10:31 remaining.
Quickly after the switch, Omaha took a two-goal lead. On a two-on-two rush, Austin Lemieux fired a shot on net while Nick Jenny went hard to the net, found the rebound, and beat Cayden Primeau to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead with 10:08 to go in the middle frame. Lemieux was credited with the lone assist on Jenny's first of the preseason.
Under one-minute later the Stars responded to pull back within a single goal. Sam Kauppila and Ludvig Hoff were below the goal line and centered the puck to the left of Zach Driscoll. Waiting at the side of the crease was Grant Jozefek for an easy tap-in goal with 9:28 to go in the period. After the Jozefek tally, the Lancers led 3-2.
Both sides went back-and-forth with chances until less than two-minutes remaining in the second period. Brian Williams received a breakaway pass, deked out Primeau, and backhanded the puck into the net with 1:35 remaining in the second period to give the Lancers a 4-2 heading into the final period.
Michael Montambault gave the Lancers a 5-2 advantage late in the game as he moved down the left wing side of the ice and let a backhand shot go that beat Primeau under his right arm. The goal was Montambault's second of the night and the score remained as the Lancers defeated Lincoln 5-2 in the first game of the preseason.
Zackarias Skog and Zach Driscoll only surrendered a goal each in the victory.
The Omaha Lancers hit the road Saturday for the first time in the preseason to take on the Sioux City Musketeers at 7:05pm at the IBP Ice Center. Fans can follow live action on Twitter and Facebook.
