Lancers' Comeback Nets Standings Point in 3-2 Shootout Loss

Dubuque, IA - Shane Sooth scored a goal in regulation and the eventual game-winning tally in the shootout as the Dubuque Fighting Saints outlasted the Omaha Lancers 3-2 Friday evening in front of 2,411 fans at the Mystique Ice Center. With the shootout defeat, Omaha's overall record on the season moved to 9-7-2 and the Lancers remain in sole possession of third place in the Western Conference with 20 standings points.

Dubuque opened the scoring 1:59 into the contest when, while on the power play, Tyler Lundey sent a perfect cross-crease pass to the left wing where Jono Davis made no mistake in sending home his second goal of the season and first since joining the Fighting Saints earlier this week. Lundey and Shane Sooth assisted on the man advantage marker, which marked the 10th time in 17 games this season that Dubuque has scored the game's first goal. With the goal, the Fighting Saints have now scored at least one power play goal in nine of the team's last 10 games. After successfully killing two additional Dubuque power plays in the opening period, the Lancers were able to even the game late in period one when Kenny Gillespie pounced on a rebound at the left wing before backhanding in his second goal of the season. Anthony Hamburg and Nolan Zajac assisted on the five-on-five even strength goal notched 18:22 into period one.

Dubuque regained the lead just past the midway point of the game when Sooth was awarded a penalty shot and made no mistake in sending in his third goal of the season. Sooth started along the right wing before gliding into the slot and sending the puck between the pads of Omaha netminder Alex Lyon. The penalty shot marked came 10:53 into the middle stanza.

Omaha continued to chip away and evened the tilt once again with under three minutes left in regulation when Jonathan Liau found Matt Gaudreau in the slot who launched a one-timer past Dubuque goaltender Gabe Antoni for his fifth goal of the season. Kevin Schulze earned the secondary assisted on the game-tying tally notched 17:25 into the final period of regulation.

After a scoreless overtime, Davis and Sooth both scored in the shootout while Tanner Lane netted the only shootout marker for the Lancers.

Antoni earned the victory in goal for Dubuque after 17 saves on 19 Lancers shots. Meanwhile, Lyon suffered the shootout loss for Omaha despite 26 saves on 28 Fighting Saints shots on goal. Lyon is now 6-5-2 on the year.

The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when they head to the Resch Center in Green Bay for the team's first and only showdown of the 2011-2012 regular season with the Gamblers.
