Omaha Lancers News Release
WATERLOO, IA.- The Lancers kicked off the two-game weekend on the road tonight (10/14) in Waterloo, Iowa for their first showdown with the Black Hawks of the 2022-23 season. And with going 5-0-0-1 against Waterloo last year, the Lancers were looking to keep that point streak alive with a victory.
The last matchup between these squads was game number 59 for Omaha last season on April 16th, 2022, resulting in a 4-2 road victory for the Lancers. Which ended up being their final regular season victory before their playoff run.
Waterloo and Omaha took the ice tonight each with four points in the western conference standings. With the Lancers entering with a 1-1-1-1 record, and the Black Hawks coming in with a 2-2-0-0 record.
The first period was very evenly played as Waterloo lead the shot count 11-8, but they trailed on the scoreboard 1-0 as the Lancers struck first.
After batting a puck away from Sam Rinzel at the 12 minute mark of the period, Frank D'Ancona rushed in on a sharp angle on Waterloo netminder, Emmett Croteau and beat him over the glove on a flicked backhand to send the Lancers into the first intermission with a one goal lead.
Lucky bounces. Those are the two words that can sum up the second period of scoring for Omaha as Charlie Lurie netted an unassisted goal off a shot from the corner that Croteau seemed to handle, but mistakenly shoveled the puck into his own net while trying to cover it for a whistle. Handing the Lancers a two goal lead just 1:33 into the period.
13 minutes later, the Lancers struck again.
After a shot from Evan Werner on the powerplay ricocheted off a leg out front, the loose puck bounced off the stick of Lurie, finding Andon Cerbone down near the goal line who then slammed the shot into the back of the net to pull Omaha up 3-0 which was the score they carried into the second intermission.
The third period was controlled by the Black Hawks as they outscored the Lancers 2-1.
Getting things going was Conner Brown, netting one short side on Lancers goaltender Michael Hrabal to make it a 3-1 game just over the halfway point of the period.
With it being a two goal game with Waterloo in control, they risked pulling Croteau with three and a half minutes left and it costed them as Evan Werner netted his third goal of the season off passes from Nate Benoit and Griffin Jurecki to pull back ahead by three, making it a 4-1 game with only a few minutes to spare.
After another attempt at pulling the goalie, Owen Baker smacked home a loose puck in the Lancers' goal crease off an original shot from Griffin Erdman to make it a 4-2 game in which the final score carried out as.
The Lancers improve to 2-1-1-1 on the season as Hrabal improves his record to 2-0-1-1 after having a 0.950 save percentage in the form of 38 saves on 40 shots faced.
The Lancers will be back at it at home tomorrow for a 6:05PM CST puck drop with the Sioux City Musketeers for their 500-poster giveaway night. The first 500 fans in the door will receive a 2022-23 regular season schedule poster upon entry. Can't make it to the game? Catch live coverage on FloSports and Mixlr!
