Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats today announced the signing of Ron Lancaster to a new contract as Head Coach and Director of Football Operations of the Canadian Football League team!

Lancaster's new three year deal ends weeks of speculation about his future with the ‘Cats.

Tiger-Cat owners, David Macdonald and George Grant, both indicated there really never was any doubt about signing Lancaster to a new contract and that the delay was simply a matter of making sure every last detail was worked out to everyone's satisfaction. Both owners also expressed great faith and confidence in Lancaster and his ability to not only keep the Hamilton franchise moving forward but in building a winner in 2003!

In 5 seasons since becoming the 17th head coach in Tiger-Cat history, Lancaster has compiled a 50-39-1 record, including two Grey Cup appearances, one of them resulting in a Grey Cup victory over Calgary in 1999.

Lancaster was also selected the CFL's Coach of the Year for 1998, the second time he has received the award, after directing the ‘Cats through a dramatic turnaround season that saw the team rebound from a 2-16 record in 1997 (the worst in team history) to the best record ever for the Tiger-Cats at 12-5 –1. The 21-point turnaround was the second greatest in team history!

2003 will represent the start of Lancaster's 15th season as a head coach in the CFL. His coaching career has included previous stops in Saskatchewan in 1979 and 1980 and 7 seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos from 1991 through 1997.
