Lakovic Finding His Footing with the Warriors this Week
March 24, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Lynden Lakovic is getting a taste of what it takes to play in the Western Hockey League.
The Moose Jaw Warriors' 2021 second round pick joined the team this week after wrapping up his season with West Van Academy in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League.
"I'm super excited to be here," Lakovic said after practice on Thursday. "I learned that its a lot faster than I anticipated, I'm excited to get to know everybody and get used to this."
Lakovic was selected with the 27th overall pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.
He said he's trying to be a sponge during his time here in Moose Jaw as he looks to prepare for his first training camp this fall.
"Just learn from the vets, they're experienced guys, so just learn what I can and use it to my advantage in the upcoming fall," Lakovic said.
The Kelowna, B.C. product put together a strong season with the West Van Academy U18 prep team, picking up 18 goals and 27 points in 33 games.
He also played two games with the West Kelowna Warriors in the BCHL.
Lakovic said getting drafted by Moose Jaw gave him a big confidence boost going down the stretch.
"When everybody gets drafted, they feel better about themselves, relieves a lot of pressure, so I gained a lot of confidence from that and it definitely helped me in all sorts of ways," he said.
Lakovic brings a lot of size to the table, standing in a six-foot-five and he said he's learning how to use that to his advantage during games.
"I use it quite a bit, I can play the skill game, I can play the dump-and-chase game, so I feel like I have versatility," he said.
With a few days of practice under his belt with the Warriors, Lakovic said he knows where his focus will be during the offseason.
"It's a lot faster out there from what I anticipated, so trying to get faster is probably one of my biggest goals and just using my size to my advantage," he said.
The Warriors are back on the ice coming up this Saturday when they host the Saskatoon Blades at Mosaic Place. Tickets are available at mjwarriors.ca.
