Lakeland Evens Series with Daytona
August 26, 2009 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA - The Daytona Cubs (25-32, 59-65) got an early lead, but could not hold on as the Flying Tigers (23-32, 52-68) evened the series at one game a piece with a 7-1 victory on Wednesday night.
The Cubs got on the board in the first inning. Third baseman Josh Vitters continued his hot-hitting with a two-out single down the left field line. Vitters moved around the bases and came into score thanks to an error and two wild pitches by Tigers starter Mark Sorenson (1-1).
The only run scored against Sorenson was unearned as he worked seven solid innings for the Flying Tigers. The Michigan native surrendered just three hits in his first win in the Florida State League.
The Flying Tigers answered the call in the top of the third inning. Catcher Jordan Newton led off the frame with an infield single. Center fielder Maiko Loyola battled his way to a full count and sent the Jay Jackson (2-2) offering to the wall in right field. Newton tied the game at one as Loyola ended up with a stand-up double.
Lakeland took the lead in the top of the fifth, but used just one hit to do so. Jackson hit the first batter of the inning and then committed back-to-back errors, the first of which scored designated hitter Luis Grullon. Shorstop Audy Ciriaco then singled through the right side of the infield to score Billy Alvino and put the Tigers in front, 3-1.
For the second straight night, a Cubs pitcher tallied a career high in strikeouts. Jackson sat down eleven Lakeland batters, but only lasted five innings. The Furman product's two errors in the top of the fifth inning were his downfall as he suffered his second straight loss.
The Flying Tigers pulled away in the top of the ninth inning with four runs off of Cubs reliever Jose Pina.
Lester Oliveros pitched the final two innings for Lakeland and picked up his second save of the year.
The Cubs will conclude their series against the Flying Tigers Thursday, August 27 with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Gates will open at 6:00p.m. It will be the final Thirsty Thursday at "The Jack" presented by Arena Sports Bar and Café as well as the VYB 103.3.
