BURLINGTON, VT ---  Miguel Marte hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 3-1 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs in a New York-Penn League game shortened to four and a half innings due to a thundersorm that came through historic Centennial Field in the fifth inning on Sunday evening.

Batavia starter Tim Cooney retired the first two batters in the bottom of the first before giving up back-to-back singles to John Wooten and Bruce Maxwell before Marte launched an 0-1 pitch over the top of the leftfield bleachers for his first home run of the season and a 3-0 Lake Monsters lead. The  Muckdogs got their run in the top of the second as David Washington doubled with one out and scored on a Jacob Wilson two-out RBI double.

Seth Streich allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts over the first three innings, while Kris Hall came on in relief to toss two scoreless innings to earn the win. After Hall got Garrett Wittels to groundout to third to end the top of the fifth, the rain came pelting down as Cooney warmed up before the bottom of the fifth inning. The umpires called the team off the field, but the rain and wind was so heavy that the Lake Monsters groundscrew was unable to get the tarp on the infield.

The three-game series with Batavia (24-22) and the six-game homestand both conclude on Monday night for Vermont (23-24) beginning at 7:05 pm. It is Derek Norris Bobblehead Night with the first 500 fans receiving a bobblehead of the 2008 Lake Monsters MVP and current Oakland Athletics catcher.
