Lowell Spinners News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY - After an early season stretch that saw Lowell Spinners pitchers walking batters at a rate short of a charity walk-a-thon, the team continued their torrid pace, winning their eighth game in their last nine, capitalizing on 10 walks by Staten Island Yankee pitchers en route to a 10-3 win Sunday evening.

For the second consecutive night, Lowell (20-27) got on the board in the first inning. Mike Miller led off the game with a double, advancing to third on a Deven Marrero ground out and scoring on a two-out single by Dreily Guerrero to give the Spinners an early 1-0 lead.

Staten Island (15-31) pulled even in the second inning after a two-out single by Fu-Lin Kuo. Matt Duran followed with a double, advancing Kuo to third and a wild pitch by Spinners' starter Pat Light brought home Kuo to knot the score at one. Duran got a little over zealous on the play, rounding third a bit too far when the throw got past Light covering the plate and was caught in no-man's land as Jake Davies, backing up the play, caught Duran leaning for the inning's third out.

The Spinners broke the game open in the top of the third, doing so while recording just one hit. Marrero worked a one-out walk, advancing to second when Matt Gedman was hit by a pitch. A walk to Guerrero loaded the bases and Mookie Betts followed with a walk of his own, scoring Marrero and chasing Staten Island starter Gabriel Encinas from the game. Davies greeted new pitcher Dietrich Enns with a double to left, scoring both Gedman and Guerrero, and Betts would come around to score on an RBI groundout by Aneury Tavarez, giving the Spinners a 5-1 lead.

Lowell would add single runs in the sixth, on a sacrifice fly from Oscar Perez following a lead-off double by Davies, and seventh, on a solo home run by Gedman, expanding the lead to 7-1.

The Yankees would cut into the lead in the eighth inning on a two-run home run by Taylor Dugas, cutting the lead to 7-3, but the Spinners answered with three insurance runs in the ninth inning, as 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star Evan DeLuca struggled with his control. Following a leadoff single by Perez, walks to Miller, Gedman, Guerrero and Betts forced in two runs, and a Davies sacrifice fly finished the scoring for what would hold as a 10-3 final.

Light, a New Jersey native, threw a season-high three innings, allowing the one run on two hits. Tyler Wilson (3-0, 5.72) followed with five innings of long-relief, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out one. Jadd Schmeltzer, making his first appearance since July 5, closed out the win with a scoreless ninth, striking out one.

The game was the first nine-inning game without a walk by Spinners pitchers since August 11, 2010.

Davies paced the Spinners offense with a 3-for-4 night, including the two doubles and adding three RBI. Betts and Guerrero each added two RBI games, while Gedman hit his third home run of the season, scoring three runs in the process.

The Spinners go for the sweep Monday morning with an 11 a.m. first pitch on getaway day. Justin Haley (0-1, 1.04) gets the start, to be followed by Raynel Velette (2-2, 3.65).
