Lake Monsters Rally With 2 Unearned Runs In 9th For 8-7 Win On Friday

JAMESTOWN, NY --- The Vermont Lake Monsters scored two unearned runs on three errors in the top of the ninth inning for a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over the Jamestown Jammers in the first of a three-game New York-Penn League series between division leaders on Friday night at Diethrick Park.

Vermont, which entered the night 0-22 when trailing after eight innings, were down 7-6 in the ninth when Wade Moore walked with one out. Jason Martinson followed with a grounder to short that Noah Perio couldn't handle for an error with Moore moving to third. Connor Rowe then fouled out to first baseman Aaron Senne for the second out, but Martinson was able to advance from first to second base.

That advance would prove key as Cole Leonida hit a grounder to second base that Dallas Poulk was unable to field properly for an error to allow Moore to score the tying run and then Martinson scored the go ahead run as Poulk's threw the ball away at first base. The Jammers got a the tying run to third in the bottom of the ninth on a one-out Ryan Fisher triple, but Ryan Demmin struckout Senne and got Aaron Dudley to flyout to end the game.

Most of the scoring happened early as Jamestown led 5-4 after three innings. Jamestown got RBI singles from Marcell Ozuna and Senne in the first inning for a 2-1 lead before Moore led off the second with his third home run of the season. Vermont added two more runs in the inning on a Hendry Jimenez RBI single and Chad Mozingo sacrifice fly for a 4-2 advantage.

The Jammers tied the game in the second on a Dallas Hord two-run single and took the 5-4 lead in the third on an RBI groundout. They added an unearned run in the sixth for a 6-4 lead, but Vermont tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-out, two-run double from Leonida. Jamestown retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Ozuna led off the inning with his league-leading 14th home run for the 7-6 lead.

Moore was 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored, while Leonida was 2-for-5 with the two-run double. Ronnie LaBrie and Martinson each had two hits for the Lake Monsters, while Demmin (1-1) gave up one hit with two walks and five strikeouts in three innings for his first win of the season as Vermont improved its record to 8-1 in Friday games.

Fisher was 3-for-4 with one run and a triple, while Ozuna was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Jordan Conley (1-2) was charged with the two unearned runs in the ninth to take the loss for Jamestown (32-22), which fell one-half game behind Williamsport in the Pinckney Division.

Vermont (29-24) is now one and a half games in front of Connecticut for first-place in the Stedler Division. The Lake Monsters will play again at Jamestown on Saturday at 7:05 pm and Sunday at 1:05 pm before taking two days off for the New York-Penn League All-Star Game at Staten Island on Tuesday.
