Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Starter Chris Lamb tossed six solid innings and Kelvin Rojas broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 2-1 victory over the Lowell Spinners in New York-Penn League action Friday Night at historic Centennial Field.
Lamb need just 70 pitches, 50 for strikes, to become the first Lake Monsters starter to work six innings this season. The only run allowed by Lamb came in the top of the fourth on three Lowell singles, two of them infield singles to third base including an RBI single from Zach Kapstein. Lamb allowed five hits and struckout three to improve to 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in three starts this season.
Vermont got on the board in the second as Bruce Maxwell reached on a one-out error by first baseman Nathan Minnich, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a Chad Lewis sacrifice fly to center. Then after the Spinners tied the game in the fourth, Maxwell singled to center with one out and scored an out later from second base on Rojas' RBI single to center for the 2-1 lead.
Reliever Kris Hall took over for Lamb in the seventh, allowing one hit with one walk and four strikeouts in two scoreless innings. Tucker Healey earned his first save of the season allowing just a one-out walk with two strikeouts in the ninth, including a called strikeout of Mookie Betts to end the game.
Mike Miller had three of Lowell's six hits for the game, while starter Zach Good (0-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts to take the loss. Brett Vertigan went 2-for-4 for Vermont (7-5), which won for the fourth time this season when being outhit by the opponent (6-5 on Friday).
After splitting the first two of the three-game series, the Lake Monsters and Spinners will wrap up the series and Vermont's six-game homestand on Saturday beginning at 6:05 pm at Centennial on TD Bank Night.
