Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - The Vermont Lake Monsters return to historic Centennial Field for a six-game homestand July 17-22 that includes the grandson of a Hall of Fame Red Sox and two local college pitchers on the roster of the Aberdeen Ironbirds, the return to Centennial of a Washington Nationals affiliate, Yo-Yo and Bike Helmet giveaways, Summer of Love and the second of three 25-cent "Hot Dog Heavens".
Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of Boston Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski, is an outfielder for the Ironbirds after being taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 14th round of the 2013 Major League Draft out the Vanderbilt University. The six-foot, 180-pound lefthander is hitting .333 (15-for-45) with seven runs and six RBI in 15 games for Aberdeen this season.
The Ironbirds pitching staff includes former Middlebury College hurler Michael Joseph and Dartmouth College's Mitch Horacek. Joseph pitched three seasons for Middlebury (2010-12), going 4-9 with 95 strikeouts in 116 innings, before signing with the Orioles on August 11, 2012. Joseph is 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in eight relief appearances for Aberdeen.
Horacek is 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA in four games for the Ironbirds after being taken in the 9th round of the 2013 draft out of Dartmouth. Horacek was 6-2 with a 2.20 ERA in eight games (seven starts) for the Big Green in 2013 and 13-7 with a 4.82 ERA in 27 career games over three seasons.
Aberdeen and Vermont will play a three-game series at Centennial Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights beginning at 7:05 pm. The Lake Monsters then host the Washington Nationals affiliated Auburn Doubledays for a three-game series Saturday (6:05), Sunday (5:05) and Monday (7:05).
The Auburn series will mark the first regular-season games at Centennial for the Doubledays since replacing the Lake Monsters as the NY-Penn League affiliate for Washington (Auburn and Vermont did face each other in the 2011 NY-Penn League semifinals). The Lake Monsters were previously affiliated with the Nationals (and Montreal Expos) for 17 years from 1994 through 2010.
