BURLINGTON, VT --- Taylor Holiday went 3-for-6 with two runs, a homer and four RBI and the Staten Island Yankees scored nine runs in the top of the fourth inning in a 13-2 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.

Holiday gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead two batters into the game with a two-run homer to rightfield after Vermont starter Hassan Pena had allowed a leadoff walk to Justin Snyder. Staten Island then put the game away with the nine-run fourth inning for an 11-0 lead.

The Yankees sent 14 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored all nine runs after there were two outs in the inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Jose Gil had an RBI single for a 3-0 lead and Pena left the game after walking Chris Raber.

Reliever Randy Matias, making his second appearance for Vermont and first at Centennial, came in and hit the first batter he faced and walked Snyder with the bases loaded to force home a run. Holiday made it 7-0 with a two-run single, followed by RBI singles from Damon Sublett and Braeyn Pruitt.

Staten Island's final two runs of the inning were unearned as they scored on a fielding error by third baseman Jake Rogers. The Yankees had five hits and five walks during the nine-run rally, then increased the lead to 12-0 with a run in the fifth.

Vermont got its only two runs of the game in the fifth inning as Sean Rooney and Rogers had backto-back one-out singles and scored on a two-out, two-run double from Dan Lyons. The Yankees scored the final run of the game in the ninth.

Yankee starter Ryan Pope (2-0) allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in six innings for the win, while Pena (4-4) was charged with six runs on four hits with five walks in just 3.2 innings for the loss.

Raber was 2-for-4 with two runs, while Snyder 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for Staten Island (35-23). Rooney, Rogers and Aaron Seuss all had three hits for Vermont (32-27).

The two teams will play game two of the three-game series at Centennial on Thursday night beginning at 7:05 p.m. Cole Kimball is scheduled to start for Vermont and it is "Hot Dog Heaven" at the ballpark with 25-cent hot dogs sold all night.

NOTES: The nine-run fourth inning for Staten Island was the second time this season that Vermont has allowed nine runs in an inning ... The Lake Monsters allowed nine runs in an inning to Hudson Valley back on July 30th, but rallied from the nine-run deficit for a 12-10 victory over the Renegades ... It was just the second time this season that Vermont has allowed double figures in runs as Hudson Valley had scored 10 runs in the game on July 30th ... It was the most runs allowed by the Lake Monsters since a 13-2 loss at Centennial to Lowell on August 28, 2006.
