Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy Health, were shutout for the second night in a row, as they fell to the Florence Freedom, 1-0 on Saturday night at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium.
The loss for the Crushers (25-24) was their seventh in a row, their longest losing streak of the season, while the Freedom (25-24) have now won four of their last five overall.
The shutout loss was Lake Erie's fourth this season and their third on the current homestand. Lake Erie hasn't scored a run since the seventh inning of Wednesday night's game against Evansville, a scoreless streak of 20 consecutive innings.
The Freedom scored the game's lone run in the top of the first inning. Jordan Brower was on second base with two outs in the top of the first when Jacob Wark smacked an 0-1 pitch through the left side of the infield for a RBI single to plate the game's only run.
Florence right-hander Christian DeLeon (3-2) retired the first nine batters he faced before walking Aaron Hill in the top of the fourth inning. DeLeon took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, where Joel McKeithan broke it up with a two-out single to center.
Lake Erie put their best threat together in the bottom of the ninth. Hill walked with one out and made his way to second on Dane Hutcheon's single to left. However, Kewby Meyer followed by bouncing into a game ending 4-3 double play.
In the 1-0 loss, the Crushers spoiled a great start from Alex Romero (4-4). Romero allowed just a run on five hits through seven strong innings and fanned five batters in the process. Luke Watts and Seth Lucio both tossed scoreless innings in relief.
DeLeon took the victory after tossing seven shutout innings and allowed just the one hit while striking out five. Jonathan Tripp (4) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.
McKeithan and Hutcheon were the only two Crushers to hit safely on the night. Hill reached twice on a pair of walks and has now reached safely in 16 straight games.
The Crushers will finish their three game series against the Florence Freedom at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Mason Klotz (2-2, 2.53) will get the start for the Crushers and righty Chuck Weaver (2-3, 5.50) will start for the Freedom. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
