Lake Elsinore Storm Cruise to Series Win over Inland Empire 66ers
July 3, 2022 - California League (CalL)
Lake Elsinore Storm News Release
The Lake Elsinore Storm have now won 6 of their last 7 games as they continue to roll through the California League. After taking the California League South Division crown in the first half of the season, they celebrated with a no-hitter and the best second-half record through 8 games.
Tonight, the sold-out crowd was able to witness this potent Storm offense at full capacity. In a 9-7 victory, the Storm amassed 13 runs after collecting 18 the night before. Unlike last night's display of power, tonight was about consistent contact and the usual crooked number. In fact, there was only one extra-base hit in tonight's game.
Carlos Luis would be the lone Storm player to hit for extra bases tonight with a double to left field, expanding his team lead in RBIs with his 54th of the season and pushing through the first run of the night. After the 66ers took the lead on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, the Storm rallied back on a fielding error to tie the game. The consistency in which this team has responded to losing the lead has become their calling card. No matter when or how many runs the other team scores, Lake Elsinore nearly always finds a way to claw their way back into the game.
After the score was tied at 2 runs each, the Storm would score 7 unanswered runs including a 5-run sixth inning that saw the inning begin with Wyatt Hoffman and end with Wyatt Hoffman. Despite accumulating 5 runs, the Storm did not have a single extra-base hit this inning. However, seven Storm players would reach base. 4 would reach on singles, 2 on walks, and 1 on a fielding error. Capitalizing on mistakes has become another constant for Lake Elsinore this season. If their opponent misplays the ball, the next batter is certain to make them pay for that blunder.
Despite the 66ers scoring 5 runs in the final 3 frames of this game, the Storm's 7-run lead proved too large of a deficit to overcome. Tonight's win marks their 46th of the season, their 6th in the second half, and gives them the series win before tomorrow's game even begins. After a 4 hit performance yesterday, Wyatt Hoffman would collect another base hit and walk. In his short time in Lake Elsinore, he is batting .385 with an OPS of 1.115.
Tomorrow night's game concludes this homestand in another expected sellout at The Diamond.
