Laconia No Match for Mountaineers

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Laconia Muskrats 6-1 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Wednesday night. With the win, Vermont wins the season series with Laconia, four games to two, and moves to 15-9 on the season. The Sanford Mainers also won on Wednesday night, holding their one run lead over the Mountaineers in the Northern Division standings.

Sam Spencer (Castleton) and Jared Gesell (UNCW) combined for yet another outstanding outing.

Spencer dealt seven strong innings, allowing no runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out six. He got the win to improve to 2-3 on the season.

Gesell pitched the eighth and ninth innings, setting down the Muskrats in order in the eighth. Gesell gave up one earned run on one hit and one walk. He struck out three, including the final two batters of the game.

Mariano Rivera (Iona), the son of New York Yankees great Mariano Rivera, started for the Muskrats and took the loss to move to 1-2 on the summer. Rivera pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out two.

The first run of the game scored in the fifth inning, when Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) led off with a single. Charbonneau moved up to second and later to third on two wild pitches during Evan Harasta's (Albany) at bat. Harasta followed with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.

Vermont scored three more runs in the sixth. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) led off with a single. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Vigliarolo to second with one out. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) followed with an RBI single to score Vigliarolo and give Vermont a 2-0 advantage. Amburgey moved to second on the throw toward the plate. Mike Krische (Canisius) then walked to set up first and second with one out.

Two batters later, Charbonneau walked to load the bases. Harasta followed by drawing another walk, scoring Amburgey from third to give the Mountaineers a 3-0 lead. Krische came in to score the third run of the inning on a wild pitch during Chandler Brock's (Alabama-Huntsville) at bat to make it 4-0.

Vermont added two more runs in the seventh to go up 6-0. The Muskrats scored their lone run of the game in the ninth.

Vermont returns to action on Thursday evening when the Mountaineers make their first trip of the summer to North Adams to battle the SteepleCats at 6:30. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
